What does a check-up and clean involve?

It’s a good idea to have your teeth checked and cleaned by your dentist every six months.

Regular check-ups allow your dentist to pick up on any small issues early before they develop into more serious problems. The good news is that our compassionate team provides preventative services for the whole family — you are welcome to choose between a male or female dentist, and we’re happy to take the time to answer any questions you have.

Here’s what you can expect from a check-up and clean…

What can I expect at a check-up?

At a dental check-up, your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums in order to check for signs of gum disease or decay, as well as oral cancers. Your dentist may take some dental x-rays to check the areas of the mouth that can’t be seen with the naked eye. As part of the examination, your dentist will look also carefully at the soft tissues of the mouth, including the lips, cheeks, tongue, and gums.

Once the examination is complete, your Crows Nest dentist will make use of a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque that has built up around the gum line and between the teeth. Once the tartar and plaque has been successfully removed, your teeth will be polished and cleaned. The teeth are cleaned with either a high-powered electrical brush and professional toothpaste, or a special abrasion handpiece that works much like a high-pressure hose. Once the teeth have been thoroughly cleaned, you may be given a fluoride treatment, which is formulated to protect your teeth from cavities.

What is the purpose of a professional dental clean?

A professional dental clean is important to remove tartar and bacteria on and around the teeth and gums. Tartar is a cement-like substance that builds up on the teeth over time and causes gum inflammation. It can only be removed by your dentist using a scaler, not at home with your toothbrush. A professional clean also reduces the number of bacteria around the teeth more than regular brushing can. When bacteria builds up, dental plaque forms, which can also, in turn, lead to inflammation in the gums. When this gum inflammation is left untreated, gum disease may develop.

What are the advantages of a professional teeth clean?

Teeth cleaning goes a long way in helping to prevent tooth decay and other problems associated with the gums and bones that support the teeth.  Besides the health benefits of a dental clean, you can also enjoy some aesthetic improvements — superficial tooth stains caused by diet and smoking can be removed to leave the teeth looking whiter and brighter.

How often should I go for a clean?

It’s a good idea to go for a professional clean every six months. A six monthly check-up and clean will ensure your teeth are looking and feeling their best when it is accompanied by good oral hygiene habits at home.  Make sure that you brush your teeth twice daily for at least two minutes at a time with a soft toothbrush. Also, remember to floss at least once a day. Flossing is an effective way of reducing the amount of plaque in your mouth, which helps to reduce gum inflammation and the risk of gum disease.
